South India Braces For Hot And Humid Weather, IMD Predicts Thunderstorms In These States For Next Few Days

Heatwave conditions have been predicted over Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana.

Several parts of the country experienced temperatures in the range of 40 to 44 degrees Celsius with several states in southern India predicted to witness heatwave, said the India Meteorological Department.

According to the weather department, the mercury settled between 40 to 44 degrees Celsius on Saturday over many parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Interior Odisha; at some parts over east Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Isolated pockets over southeast UP and Saurashtra, these are above normal by 2-4°C.

Heatwave conditions are "very likely" to take place in isolated pockets over Tamil Nadu, interior Karnataka, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana on Sunday.

North interior Karnataka and Telangana are expected to experience warm night conditions. 

Hot and humid weather is "very likely" to prevail over Kerala and Mahe, coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch till Wednesday, over coastal Karnataka, Konkan, and Goa on Sunday, and over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalseema from Sunday till Wednesday. 

The weatherman also predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-50 kmph) over Kerala and Mahe from April 6-12, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from April 7-10, Karnataka during April 9 to 12 , Puducherry, Karaiakal, and Telangana during April 8 to 12. 

On Saturday, some parts over Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, east Telangana, interior Odisha and North interior Tamil Nadu experienced heatwave conditions. 

However, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 35.1 degrees Celsius, normal during the season, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 20.2 degrees Celsius which is also normal during the season, it said.

The humidity remained at 46 per cent and 28 per cent. 

The national capital's Air Quality Index was recorded in the "moderate" category with a reading of 166, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 9 am.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
