Violent Clashes Between BJP And CPI(M) Erupt In Tripura , Several Injured

CPI(M)’s youth wing took out a procession in Udaipur's town of Tripura during which a few activists from the rally allegedly attacked a ruling BJP activist.

New Delhi: Violent clashes erupted between BJP and the left student union DYFI in the Gomti district of Tripura. The clashes occurred during a rally at the CPI(M)’s youth wing. Several people are injured during this clash and both the parties accused each other holding them responsible for the violence.

Reports also suggest that during the CPI (M) some activists of the party attacked a ruling BJP worker, leaving him seriously injured.

Police said a group of BJP activists, who were camping nearby, retaliated by attacking the DYFI procession. After the violence, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted a video accusing the BJP.

Police said two to three people were injured in the violence but their political affiliation is yet to be ascertained. According to sources, party offices of CPI(M) in Agartala, Bishalgarh, and Kathalia were also vandalized and set on fire after the Udaipur clash.

CPI (M) workers carry out demonstrations in Agartala, Tripura alleging vandalism at party offices by BJP, reported ANI.

Clashes broke out between activists of both parties on Monday following the earlier round of violence when former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was allegedly prevented from proceeding to Dhanpur.

Police force deployed in the area

Police said the injured BJP activist from Udaipur was in critical condition and was shifted to G.B Pant Hospital in Agartala. He said a large police contingent had to be deployed to disperse the mob and prevent further riots. Officials also said that a group of unidentified miscreants also vandalized CPI(M)’s Udaipur party office, while a vehicle belonging to the former Left Front minister Ratan Bhowmick was set on fire. Agriculture Minister Pranajit Singh Roy rushed to the spot soon after the clash and took stock of the situation.

Speaking to the media, the minister said that the youth wing of the CPI(M) had taken out a rally without seeking prior permission from the police. He said the government will take legal action against those involved in the violence. Meanwhile, Union Minister of State Pratima Bhowmik led a protest march at Dhanpur in Sonamura sub-division protesting Monday's violence. Later in the evening, the BJP Sadar district unit also held a protest rally in the capital Agartala.
