Chennai, Other Parts Of Tamil Nadu Under Orange & Yellow Alerts As IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall
According to weather predictions, residents in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in western and southern regions, can expect another day of rainfall, with some areas likely to receive heavy showers.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu on March 12, cautioning residents about thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to heavy rainfall in several regions.
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation that was previously positioned over the northeast Equatorial Indian Ocean and the southeast Bay of Bengal has now shifted to the Equatorial Indian Ocean and southwest Bay of Bengal, hovering at 1.5 km above mean sea level.
Districts Under Orange and Yellow Alerts
- Orange Alert – Moderate Rain & Thunderstorms: The IMD has warned that light thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rain are expected in multiple districts, including: Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, Tenkasi, and Karaikal.
Yellow Alert – Light to Moderate Rain: The yellow alert has been issued for the following districts, where light thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain are expected at isolated locations: Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thiruchirappalli, Madurai, and Puducherry.
A well-known independent weather blogger from the Chennai Rains (COMK) page stated, “As the cyclonic circulation continues to move westward, we can expect another day of rainfall in western and southern Tamil Nadu, with a few locations likely to receive heavy showers. In Chennai and its suburbs, light drizzles or rain may occur during the morning, but dry weather is expected to return from tomorrow.”
