Tamil Nadu Braces For Intense Heat As Kathiri Veyil Begins May 4

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts further temperature increases between May 1 and May 4, with a slight dip in isolated areas expected on May 5.

With Kathiri Veyil—also known as Agni Nakshatram—set to begin on May 4, Tamil Nadu is preparing for a severe spike in temperatures over the next 25 days. The seasonal heatwave, expected to last until May 28, is projected to be more intense than in recent years, with temperatures likely to rise 4°C to 5°C above normal across several districts.

Coastal and interior areas, including Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Vellore, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Ramanathapuram, have already begun experiencing unseasonably high temperatures with several regions crossing the 100°F (38°C) mark, as per reports. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts further temperature increases between May 1 and May 4, with a slight dip in isolated areas expected on May 5.

Despite occasional summer showers in some regions, the state is expected to remain predominantly hot and dry throughout the Agni Nakshatram period. The IMD has advised residents of Tamil Nadu, as well as those in Puducherry and Karaikal, to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

Heatwave Guidelines

In response to the looming heatwave, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has issued a public advisory emphasizing heat safety measures. Key recommendations include avoiding to go out between 12 noon and 3 PM. Drinking water frequently, even if not thirsty. Avoid certain beverages including alcohol, coffee, tea, and soft drinks and opting for buttermilk, lemon water, and fresh fruit juices with a pinch of salt to stay hydrated.

The residents are also advised to use umbrellas, hats, or scarves when outdoors. Children, pregnant women, senior citizens, and people with pre-existing conditions are told to maintain extra care.
