Who is Shehla Rashid?

A research scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, who shot to limelight when she led the the student agitation calling for the release of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who were arrested on charges of sedition in February 2016 for participating and organizing in sloganeering.

She was the vice-president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015–16 and was a member of the All India Students Association (AISA).

Shehla Rashid had found herself mired in several controversies over the years, mostly because of her tweets. In August 2019, she tweeted that Indian Army was torturing Kashmiris as a consequence of Indian revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. The allegation was rejected by the army as baseless. Supreme court lawyer Alok Srivastsava had then filed a complaint under offence of sedition and sought criminal action against her.

What are the allegations made by Rashid’s father?

Speaking to ABP News, Shehla Rashid’s estranged father Abdul Rashid Shohra, said that her political activities are being funded by anti-national forces.

A day before he had demanded that a probe be initiated into her NGOs as he accused her of having taken a huge amount of money for joining politics in Kashmir valley.

“Shehla formed this party when she went to US. All their funds coming from anti-national forces. No national party will fund them. Along with asking for security for myself, I've asked DG sir to investigate into their fund sources,” he said.

‘Wife-beater,’ Shehla’s response to her father’s allegations

Denying all the charges made by her father, Shehla leveled counter allegations at Abdul Rahsid Shohra and said that he is a wife-beater,  an abusive and a depraved man.

When ABP News reached Shehla for clarification on the matter, she said all the allegations made against her are baseless, instead her father has no connection with her family. “There are FIRs against him for abusing my mother. He was never there when the family needed, for the education of his children, he would not even know the uniform of his children,” said Shehla.  He has been restrained by court from entering the house, she said.

On Monday, she had tweeted a detailed response saying "Many of you must have come across a video of my biological father making wild allegations against me and my mum and sis. To keep it short and straight, he's a wife-beater and an abusive, depraved man. We finally decided to act against him, and this stunt is a reaction to that."

“I was restored to the right of habitation to my house,” her father’s response

“I was restored to the right of habitation to my house in a day by a court order after the domestic violence complaint. If I'm a violent person, surely there must be a string of FIRs against me? But there are not,” he said.
