Background
As India marks its 75th Republic Day on January 26, 2024, festivities are underway across the nation. French President Emmanuel Macron has been invited to preside over the proceedings as the chief guest.
Tableaux from 16 states and Union Territories are participating in the parade. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Ladakh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Manipur, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana are showcasing their tableaux.
Apart from them, tableaux from 9 ministries and departments — Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Ministry of Culture, Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research, Election Commission of India, and Central Public Works Department — are also taking part in the Republic Day parade.
In contrast to conventional calendar years, Republic Day in India is commemorated based on the years since the adoption of the Indian Constitution. The historic adoption took place on January 26, 1950, making 2024 the 75th anniversary of this momentous event. The Constitution's adoption symbolized the successful efforts of the Constituent Assembly. Although India gained independence in 1947, the Constitution officially came into force on January 26, 1950.
The 75th Republic Day in 2024 carries significant historical importance, embodying the spirit of an independent India. On this day in 1950, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Poorna Swaraj, marking India's liberation from colonial rule. It serves as a poignant reminder of the democratic power vested in citizens to elect their government.
The inaugural Republic Day parade in 1950 occurred at the Irwin Amphitheater, now known as the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. The first parade at Rajpath, currently Kartavyapath, took place in 1955, with Pakistan's Governor General Malik Ghulam Muhammad serving as the chief guest.
In preparation for the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital, extensive security measures have been implemented. The Delhi Police announced on Wednesday that approximately 14,000 security personnel will be deployed in and around Kartavya Path, the venue for the Republic Parade on January 26. Heightened security aims to ensure the safety of the expected 77,000 invitees at Kartavya Path, according to officials.
Special Commissioner of Police (Security) Dependra Pathak, during a press conference at the Delhi Police headquarters, detailed the comprehensive security arrangements. He emphasized the professional, robust, and flawless security measures implemented throughout Delhi for Republic Day, as reported by news agency PTI.
Pathak highlighted the collaboration between security, traffic, and district units, working in coordination with central security agencies for the January 26 celebrations. He disclosed that 14,000 security personnel, each assigned specific roles and responsibilities, will be deployed at the main operational area of Kartavya Path. As many as 70,000 security personnel have been deployed across Delhi.
The Commissioner outlined the deployment of commandos, quick reaction teams, PCR vans, morchas, anti-sabotage checks, and SWAT teams at strategic locations in and around Kartavya Path and the city, as reported by PTI. He assured the public that the Delhi Police is professionally prepared to address any potential emergencies.
