Ratan Tata raises concern over hardships caused to poor people due to demonetisation

New Delhi: Days after hailing the government's move to demonetize high-value currency notes, Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata on Thursday raised concerns over hardships caused  due to it to the common man during medical emergencies. Tata urged the government to consider relief measures in smaller towns for the poor segment for their daily needs and medical treatment in smaller hospitals. He said it should be similar to measures applied during times of national calamities. He also stressed on the plight of poor people who were running short of cash to fulfill their daily household need for food. Tata insisted that emergency measures during this hour will be greatly appreciated by the “distressed segment of the population”. It would exhibit that the government cares and has not forgotten the needs of the common man during this important period of transition. Tata had earlier called the demonetization decision as a bold act saying it will eliminate black money and corruption. "Demonetisation of old currency notes by the Modi government is a bold act that will wipe out black money and corruption. It deserves our support," he said in a tweet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a surprise move on November 8, had announced that legal tender character of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 stands withdrawn from the following day. The move was aimed at curbing black money, check circulation of fake currency and terror funding. Following the announcements, long queues have been seen outside banks for exchanging and depositing the old currency.
