Rahul Gandhi Lauds Telangana Draft Law For Gig Workers, Urges CM Revanth To Hold Statewide Consultations
In a letter addressed to the Telangana Chief Minister, Rahul Gandhi pointed out issues such as exploitative working conditions, predatory pricing, and inadequate grievance redressal mechanisms.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi praised Telangana government's draft legislation aimed at improving the welfare of gig workers while urging Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to hold statewide consultations to refine the proposed law. Gandhi expressed his willingness to participate in the consultative process to ensure a robust and inclusive framework.
In a letter addressed to the Telangana Chief Minister, Gandhi highlighted the opportunities and challenges faced by gig workers. "Over the last decade, lakhs of workers have joined the gig economy. The relatively easy entry and flexibility offered opportunities, especially in low skilled roles, the generous incentives in early years also helped many acquire income-generating assets ," he wrote, noting that while many success stories have emerged, the sector remains fraught with vulnerabilities due to the lack of regulations.
He pointed out issues such as exploitative working conditions, predatory pricing, and inadequate grievance redressal mechanisms. "Workers also grapple with social discrimination and inhumane conduct daily," Gandhi added.

Reaffirming the Congress party's commitment to worker welfare, Gandhi referred to the Rajasthan government’s legislation for gig workers and commended Telangana's progress in drafting its law. He emphasised the importance of public consultations, drawing inspiration from Telangana's recent socio-economic and caste survey.
"I request you to conduct similar state-wide public consultations for the draft legislation for gig workers as well. Hearing from all parties will ensure that the law is robust, effective and meaningful. The process can also help anchor future regulations for this sector. I will be happy to be a part of this consultative process," Gandhi wrote. He reiterated that such a process could serve as a model for future regulations in the sector.
Responding to Gandhi, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to creating a pioneering policy. "Dear @RahulGandhi Ji.
