Punjab CM-Elect Bhagwant Mann To Resign As Sangrur MP On Monday

Mann, who is currently the MP from Punjab’s Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, will tender his resignation in the national capital, news agency ANI reported.

New Delhi: Punjab chief minister-elect Bhagwant Mann will tender his resignation as the Member of Parliament on Monday.

Mann, who is currently the MP from Punjab’s Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, will tender his resignation in the national capital, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier in the day, Mann and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal held a mega roadshow in Amritsar to celebrate the party's landslide victory in the Punjab Assembly elections.

The duo visited the Golden Temple ahead of the roadshow.

Mann will take oath as the chief minister of Punjab on March 16 at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of iconic freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

Earlier on Saturday, the 48-year-old staked claim to form the government in Punjab after meeting Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

Mann after the meeting told mediapersons outside the Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh that he handed over a letter of support of his party MLAs to the Governor who accepted it.

“We staked claim to form the government and the Governor Sahib approved it,” he said, PTI reported.

Mann was elected the AAP Legislature Party leader at a meeting of the party MLAs held in Mohali earlier on Friday.

The AAP bagged a historic win in the Punjab elections registering victories in 92 seats in the 117-member assembly.

The ruling Congress, which won 77 seats in 2017, was reduced to 18 seats with most of its big leaders, including Chief Minister Charanjit Channi and state party chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, facing humiliating defeat in their respective strongholds.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its previous ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) failed in securing even a double-digit tally.

The BJP, which won three seats in 2017 when it contested in alliance with the SAD, secured only two seats.

The SAD won only four seats.
