PUBG Ban? Over A Million Gamers In India To Be Affected; Memes Break Internet As Game Comes Under Scanner

The Indian government is planning to ban 47 more Chinese app and this time even popular online game PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG) may be shut.

In a horrific incident, a 21-year-old youth allegedly beheaded his father for not allowing him to play the popular game Players Unknown Battleground, ubiquitously known by its acronym PUBG.

New Delhi: After banning 59 Chinese apps including popular ones like TikTok, WeChat, and UC Browser almost a month ago, the Indian government is planning to shut down 49 more Chinese apps and this time it is possible that PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG) may get a huge setback. According to reports, the government is mulling over banning popular online game PUBG which has a large south Asian region. It has become one of the most loved games, especially in India and Pakistan. According to a report by IANS, the game saw over 175 million installs in India. In the first quarter of this year, PUBG Mobile has seen a global revenue gain of $1.3 billion (roughly Rs 9,731 crore). Players also earn revenue from the game and there is chance of winning anywhere from Rs.1 lakh to Rs. 10 lakhs for the first prize in weekly and monthly PUBG competitions. Is PUBG Chinese? Unlike other apps that have been banned, PUBG is not entirely Chinese, the game was developed and published a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. After it started gaining popularity Chinese company Tencent joined with Bluehole to handle distribution and market it in China. The game is distributed in India by Tencent Holdings It is because of this reason that the Indian government fears that the game might be used for breaching privacy and stealing personal information. Pakistan’s ban on PUBG Earlier this month Pakistan also banned the app as cases of suicide was on the rise in the country. Reports say that its craze spiking to harmful extents, Pakistan decided to impose a ban on it. In several cases of suicide the reason cited was a failure in completing tasks on the viral gaming app. The PTA had issued a statement revealing that it received complaints about the game being too addictive, a waste of time and having a potentially negative impact on children's physical and psychological health.
