After the hiatus of 15 years, the current President, Ram Nath Kovind, will undertake the train journey. Earlier in 2006, the then President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam had travelled from Delhi to Dehradun where he was scheduled to attend the passing out parade of the Indian Military Academy.

Dr Rajendra Prasad used to travel by rail to connect with the local people

According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the country's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad often liked to travel by rail. Soon after becoming the President, he also visited his birthplace Ziradei in Siwan district in the middle of his Bihar tour. He travelled by train from Chhapra to Ziradei by special Presidential train and stayed there for 3 days. During his Presidential term, he often planned train journeys across the country. After Dr Rajendra Prasad, various Presidents had preferred rail travel to facilitate stronger bonds and connection with the public.
