Modi To Attend Mauritius’ National Day Event As Chief Guest On March 12, Hold Talks With President, PM
PM Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius from March 11-12 as the chief guest for the nation's National Day celebrations. He will meet with Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool and PM Navin Ramgoolam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mauritius on March 11-12, 2025, as the chief guest at the country’s National Day celebrations. During his visit, PM Modi will call on Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on Friday.
"PM Modi will be in Mauritius on the 11th and 12th of March to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius, which falls on the 12th of March, as the chief guest. A contingent of Indian Defence Forces will participate in the celebrations along with a ship from the Indian Navy. The Prime Minister last visited Mauritius in 2015. During the visit, the Prime Minister will call on the President of Mauritius, meet with the Prime Minister of Mauritius and hold several other meetings with important dignitaries and senior leaders from the country," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
According to a release by the MEA, the Prime Minister will also interact with the members of the Indian-origin community, and inaugurate the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both built with India’s grant assistance. "A number of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be exchanged during the visit," it stated.
"India and Mauritius share a close and special relationship rooted in shared historical, cultural and people to people ties. Further, Mauritius forms an important part of India’s Vision SAGAR, i.e., Security and growth for All in the Region. The visit will reaffirm the strong and enduring bond between India and Mauritius and reinforce the shared commitment of both countries to enhance the bilateral relationship across all sectors," the release added.

PM Modi's Visit Testimony Of Close Relations Between India & Mauritius: Navin Ramgoolam
Last month, Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, addressing the country's parliament, confirmed Modi’s visit. "In the context of the celebrations of the 57th anniversary of the Independence of our country, I have great pleasure to inform the House that following my invitation, His Excellency, Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations," he said, as per news agency IANS.
He further highlighted the significance of Modi’s participation, stating, "It is indeed a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, in spite of his very tight schedule and in spite of his recent visits to Paris and the United States. He has agreed to be here as our special guest. The visit of Shri Modi is a testimony of the close relations between our two nations."
Prime Minister Modi had earlier congratulated Ramgoolam on his election as Mauritius’ Prime Minister in November last year. "Had a warm conversation with my friend @Ramgoolam_Dr, congratulating him on his historic electoral victory. I wished him great success in leading Mauritius and extended an invitation to visit India. Look forward to working closely together to strengthen our special and unique partnership," Modi had written in a post on X.
India has consistently reaffirmed its deep ties with Mauritius under Modi’s leadership. In July 2024, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar visited Mauritius, where he held discussions with then Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Ramgoolam on various aspects of bilateral relations, including development partnership, defence and maritime cooperation, economic and trade ties, and people-to-people linkages.
During the visit, Jaishankar, alongside Jugnauth, inaugurated several High Impact Community Development Projects, exchanged Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), and handed over the first Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to two seventh-generation Indian-origin Mauritians. Twelve community development projects related to infrastructure, education, healthcare, public amenities, and sports were virtually inaugurated as part of India’s continued support for Mauritius’ progress.
