PM Modi Chairs High-Level Meet Over Monsoon Rain, Flood Situation Across Country: Sources

PM Narendra Modi chaired a crucial meeting on the prevailing monsoon situation across the country, according to sources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting with ministers and officials of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) over the current monsoon and rain situation across the country, as per sources. Two senior Union ministers were reportedly present at the PM's residence for the meeting after rain-led floods and landslides wreak havoc in several north Indian states, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Delhiites residing in the flood-prone areas near river Yamuna are now being shifted to safer locations as the river exceeded the 'Evacuation Mark' of 206 metres on Tuesday amid heavy rainfall, reported news agency PTI.

In the past 24 hours, eight people have died in Uttar Pradesh and two have lost their lives in Uttarakhand as rain wreaks havoc across several states in the country. The frightening sitiution in Himachal Pradesh which saw several tourists being stranded with rockslides and landslides damaging vehicles has not seen an improvement as heavy rain led to the swelling of the Beas river that flooded nearby areas. Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will take stock of the affected regions today by conducting an aerial survey today.

Eight people died in the past 24 hours in Uttar Pradesh. Five out of eight died in lightning strikes, 2 died by drowning and one died following a snake bite. Many districts in UP have witnessed much more rainfall than usual. 33 districts have experienced more than usual rainfall, 21 witnessed the usual rainfall that those districts are used to getting every year at this time, 9 districts witnessed lesser than usual rainfall, and 12 witnessed very less rainfall than usual.
