PM Modi Calls Cabinet Meeting On Security Affairs To Discuss Afghanistan Crisis, NSA Doval Present

The prevailing situation in Afghanistan was thoroughly discussed in this meeting.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday convened a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security against the backdrop of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. According to reports, the meeting began at 6.30 pm at the PM Residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi.

Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the meeting was been attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Foreign Minister Jaishankar was unable to attend the meeting as he is currently in the US.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was also a part of this cabinet meeting on security affairs. Doval has been debriefing the cabinet on the current situation in Afghanistan and a thorough discussion on political, social and strategic scenarios was done in the meeting. 

During the meeting, Doval said that he is in constant touch with all major countries in the region. "Things are changing rapidly in Afghanistan and it is still not clear what the nature of the new Taliban-led government will be after Ashraf Ghani abdicated and left the country," he said.

PM Modi was also informed that continuous efforts are being carried out to evacuate Indians trapped in Afghanistan. An Indian Air Force aircraft carrying 150 rescued Indians landed in the country today. The challenges that lay before the rescue missions have also been put before the Cabinet. The meeting was aimed to ensure that no stone would be left unturned to evacuate all Indians from Afghanistan.

The situation in Kabul and the decision to evacuate all diplomats and its challenges were also elaborated in the cabinet meeting. Indian authorities are currently keeping a close watch on the rapidly changing situation.
