Parliament Today: Stage Set For Stormy Debate Between NDA, I.N.D.I.A With NEET, New Criminal Laws In Focus

As the two Houses of Parliament reconvene on Monday, the NDA and the I.N.D.I.A bloc are likely to clash over multiple issues like NEET, inflation, and the three new criminal laws.

Parliament Session: The two Houses of Parliament, which will reconvene on Monday, are set to witness a stormy session as the rulling NDA and the opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A are likely to clash over a range of issues like the NEET paper leak row, the Agnipath initiative, and inflation when both houses reconvene on Monday.

Besides the paper leak matter, the opposition is also likely to attack the Centre over three new criminal laws that came into effect on July 1 and the issue of unemployment.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has accused central investigative agencies of "misleading" the Supreme Court, said the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc will hold a protest against it on the Parliament premises on Monday.

Parliament Session 2nd Week: Here Are Top Points

  • In the Lok Sabha, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur is set to initiate the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address. The motion will be seconded by first term Lok Sabha member Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj.
  • According to news agency PTI, the Lower House has allocated 16 hours for the debate on the Motion of Thanks, which will conclude with the reply by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
  • Addressing a press conference on Sunday, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said that the INDIA bloc plans to protest against probe agencies in Parliament on Monday. He said that despite a trial court granting bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought the High Court's intervention and secured a stay on bail.
  • The AAP MP said that when Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal seemed set to receive bail from the Supreme Court, the central government got him arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This is a "blatant misuse of investigating agencies", he said, as reported by PTI. He further stated that the ED and CBI lack evidence against Arvind Kejriwal and his former deputy, Manish Sisodia.
  • In the Rajya Sabha, 21 hours have been set aside for the debate, and the prime minister will likely reply on Wednesday.
  • The two Houses of Parliament have also been rocked by protests over the NEET issue. NEET-UG was conducted by the NTA on May 5, with around 24 lakh candidates appearing. The results were announced on June 4, but they were followed by allegations of question paper leaks in states such as Bihar, besides other irregularities.
  • Initiating the debate in the Rajya Sabha, BJP member Sudhanshu Trivedi had described Modi as "atulniya" (matchless) and asserted that there was a vast difference in his approach towards dealing with issues facing the nation and the one adopted by the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
  • BJP member Kavita Patidar seconded the motion, and nine others have participated in the discussion so far.
  • The members of the opposition forced adjournment in the Lok Sabha on Friday, when the House was to take up the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's Address, demanding a dedicated discussion on the NEET issue.
  • The Rajya Sabha witnessed vociferous protests during the debate, with the opposition demanding a discussion on the NEET row and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge trooping into the Well of the House to join fellow members.
  • Congress member Phulo Devi Netam from Chhattisgarh fainted in the Rajya Sabha while raising slogans, apparently due to high blood pressure, and was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, as reported by PTI.
  • Opposition members slammed the government for not adjourning the proceedings of the House and showing a lack of concern for the health of a member of the Upper House.
