Param Bir Singh Not Called Again But Told To Appear When Needed: Mumbai Police

Param Bir Singh has not reported to work since May this year, after his transfer from the post of Mumbai police commissioner.

New Delhi: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh on Thursday appeared before Mumbai Police Crime Branch which is probing an extortion case against him.

“He has given statements before the crime branch. As per SC order, he will continue to cooperate in the probe,” his lawyer said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

In its statement about the questioning, Mumbai Police said that Param Bir Singh recorded his statement in the extortion case registered by Bimal Agrawal in Crime branch unit 11 office Kandivali.

“Questions were asked to him only in this case. He hasn’t been called again as of now but has been told that he’ll be called as and when needed”: Mumbai Police said, as reported by ANI.

After appearing before the crime branch, Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said: “I have joined the investigation today, as per the order of the Supreme Court. I am cooperating in the investigation and I have full faith in the court”.

The former Mumbai police commissioner was questioned for around seven hours on Thursday, news agency PTI reported as officials saying.

Param Bir Singh was seen leaving the crime branch unit-11 in an official vehicle around 6.15 pm.

The IPS officer, declared a proclaimed offender by a city court, appeared before the crime branch to record a statement in an extortion case registered at Goregaon police station in the city against him.

The Crime Branch questioning took place after the former police commissioner arrived in Mumbai on Thursday to join the investigation as directed by the court, an official said, as reported by PTI.

I will join the investigation as directed by the court, Param Bir Singh told the media on arrival.

The IPS officer, who is facing several extortion cases in Maharashtra, had told news channels on Wednesday that he was in Chandigarh.

Param Bir Singh has not reported to work since May this year, after his transfer from the post of Mumbai police commissioner and his subsequent allegations of corruption against then Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh.

The Supreme Court has granted Param Bir Singh protection from arrest.

He was transferred after Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze was arrested in the case of an SUV with explosives found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's house, ‘Antilia’ and the subsequent suspicious death of businessman Mansukh Hiran.
