Farmers are protesting in a patriotic way. We have suggested the names of Justices Kurian Joseph and Markandeya Katju for the Committee", as reported by legal news portal LiveLaw India. The statement is being picked on by people on both sides of the fence as it appears to indirectly call the Shaheen Bagh protests unpatriotic. Those in support of farmers' agitation have condemned the statement for the implication, the religious aspect is also being called about. Earlier, AP Singh is reported to have assured the top court that women, elders, and children will not participate in the ongoing farmers' protests, a stand appreciated by the bench. This also has been criticised by a section of people terming the assurance as being 'sexist' since women's participation is being discouraged. Notably, activist and Swaraj India Party President Yogendra Yadav reported that no such understanding of sending back women and children was reached with agitating farmers. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court put a stay on implementation of agrarian laws while constituting a 4-member committee which is again being debated over. Farmer leaders claimed that the central government is getting this done through the top court as the members publically supported the legislation earlier.
