New Delhi: The nation is commemorating Teachers' Day today to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, former president of India. At a ceremony conducted at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu conferred national awards to 45 teachers from all over the nation.

During the event, while handing out awards to teachers for their outstanding contributions to shaping the future of the country, President Murmu came down from the stage to honour a differently abled teacher from Uttarakhand.

Highlighting the gesture made by President Murmu, Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan took to Twitter and wrote: “This heartwarming gesture by Hon. @rashtrapatibhvn at the presentation of National Awards to Teachers is a sweet reminder of her humility, rootedness, and compassion. President Murmu is an inspiration when it comes to ideal public values.”

Speaking on the occasion, the President remembered her teachers and said that they not only taught her but also gave her love and inspiration.

The President said that it is the duty of teachers to pique students' interests in science and research. With the use of real-world examples found in nature, effective teachers can simplify the explanation of difficult concepts.

"The mediocre teacher tells; the good teacher explains; the superior teacher demonstrates; and the great teacher inspires,” she remarked. The President also urged teachers to help children develop the habit of raising questions and expressing doubts. She said that their understanding would advance as they cleared up more and more problems and uncertainties.
