With the active assistance of USDoJ, the US Sky Marshal, NIA worked closely with other Indian intelligence agencies, NSG through the entire extradition process, which also saw India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs coordinating with the other relevant authorities in the United States to take the matter to its successful conclusion, the statement read.

The statement came amid reports that Rana has landed in Delhi. Rana was extradited from the US on a special flight on Wednesday and will now face the law.
According to NIA, the District Court for the Central District of California had ordered his extradition on 16th May 2023. Rana then filed filed multiple litigations in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, all of which were rejected. He subsequently filed a petition for a writ of certiorari, two habeas petitions, and an emergency application before the U.S. Supreme Court, which were also denied. NIA added that the extradition proceedings were initiated between the two countries after India eventually secured a surrender warrant for the wanted terrorist from the US government.
Security Tightened At Patiala House Court Ahead Of Rana's Likely Appearance
The security has been stepped up outside Delhi's Patiala House Court, where Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana is likely to be produced on Thursday following his extradition from the US, an official said, reports news agency PTI. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla, along with the local police, was present at the spot to ensure that necessary security arrangements are present at the court where Rana will be produced, he said.
The personnel from the paramilitary forces and CISF have been deployed outside the court, and a thorough physical frisking and checking of visitors is being carried out to avoid any untoward incident, he added.
A senior police officer added that three Delhi Traffic Police is also ensuring that the route from the airport to the court is decongested. An NIA judge is expected to hear the matter.
Meanwhile, Tihar Jail officials said all preparations have been made to lodge Rana in a high-security prison ward, and they were waiting for court orders. He is likely to be lodged in Tihar jail when he reaches India. The 64-year-old Pakistan-born Canadian national, Rana, is a close associate of one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, David Coleman Headley, alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen. Rana is being brought to India after his last-ditch attempt to evade extradition failed as the US Supreme Court justices rejected his application.
