Man Killed Over Facebook Post In Gujarat, State Govt Transfers Investigation To ATS

“The case of violent incident of Dhandhuka has been handed over to the ATS. Gujarat Police is committed to provide justice to the victim’s family,” Sanghavi tweeted in Gujarati earlier on Saturday.

New Delhi: The Gujarat government has transferred the investigation into the murder of a 27-year-old man over a Facebook post that allegedly hurt religious sentiments to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said the Gujarat Police is committed to provide justice to the victim’s family.

“The case of violent incident of Dhandhuka has been handed over to the ATS. Gujarat Police is committed to provide justice to the victim’s family,” Sanghavi tweeted in Gujarati earlier on Saturday.

Sanghavi, who visited the victim’s native Chachana village in Surendranagar district earlier on Friday, told reporters that the investigation into the murder at Dhandhuka has been handed over to the ATS, news agency PTI reported.

Earlier on January 25, Kishan Bharwad (Boliya) was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants as he, along with his cousin Bhaumik Boliya, was passing by the Modhwada locality of Dhandhuka town on a two-wheeler at around 5: 30 p.m.

The victim’s cousin had later lodged a police complaint in this regard. He, however, could not identify the assailants but indicated that this could be linked to the Facebook post.

Three people, identified as Shabbir Chopra (25), Imtiaz Pathan (27) and Maulvi Mohammad Ayub Javrawala, were arrested later on Friday in connection with the murder of Bharwad, who was out on bail.

The 27-year-old deceased had earlier on January 6 shared a post on Facebook after which some members of the Muslim community filed a police complaint alleging it hurt their sentiments.
