Mamata Banerjee To Participate In G20 Meet In Delhi Called By PM Modi On December 5

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that she will attend a meeting for the G20 summit that will be hosted by India next year, reported news agency PTI. The meeting has been called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is slated to take place on December 5 in the national capital. 

Banerjee, however, said that she will be attending the meeting in the capacity of Trinamool Congress chairperson and not as the Chief Minister of Bengal, the report added. 

“I will be travelling to New Delhi on December 5 to participate in the PM’s meeting,” Banerjee told reporters at the state assembly.

The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world's major developed and developing economies. At the G20 summit in Bali this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was handed over the G20 presidency by Indonesian President Joko Widodo. 

The summit which took place in Indonesia’s Bali province on November 15 and 16 saw world leaders sharing centre stage as they held discussion on key issues of global concern under the theme of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Rishi Sunak and other world leaders and briefed them on India’s evolving G20 priorities.

The meeting was also considered significant as it brought US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping together on the world stage amid escalating tension over Hong Kong, Covid pandemic and Taiwan. 

The Group of 20 comprise of the following nations and regions: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
