Mamata Banerjee Holds Up 1990s Attack Image After Being Heckled During Oxford University Event: WATCH

A group of students raised slogans and pointed questions at Mamata Banerjee regarding the RG Kar doctor's case and post-poll violence in West Bengal, later asking her to "go back".

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests and repeated disruptions from the audience members during her speech at Oxford University's Kellogg College.

A group of students raised slogans and pointed questions at her regarding the RG Kar doctor's case and post-poll violence in West Bengal, asking her to "go back".

A defiant Banerjee continued to respond to the agitation, but when the event took a dramatic turn, she responded to the heckling by holding up an old image of herself from the early 1990s, showing her bandaged head, claiming it to be proof of an attempt to murder by the opposition. "First see my picture, how an attempt was made to kill me," she said.

The disruptions started when the Bengal CM was speaking about the development and investment opportunities in the state. She was then asked by an audience member to name specific investment proposals worth "lakhs of crores", which she said the state had received.

When she started to reply, other members in the audience intervened, causing the questioner to stop and assert that the event was not a press conference.

She was then questioned about the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case in Kolkata, which had triggered widespread protests and outrage across the country. She was pressed on her government's handling of the incident, following which she gave a sharp response to the audience.

"This matter is sub judice, this case is with the central government. Do not do politics here, this platform is not for politics. You are lying. Do not make it a political platform," she said.

She futher accused the questioners in the audience of having a political agenda. "You go to Bengal and tell your political party to become even stronger. I will answer you, first see my picture, how an attempt was made to kill me," she said.

However, the interruptions continued, and someone subsequently raised a question regarding the treatment of Hindus in Bengal. To this, Banerjee responded, "I am for all, Hindus and Muslims." However, moments later, slogans of "Go back" broke out from a section of the audience.

"You should give me a chance to speak. You are not insulting me; you are disrespecting your institution," a visibly frustrated Banerjee said, pushing back against the demonstrators.

SFI-UK Slams Kellogg College For Hosting 'Anti-Democratic' Leader

The protest was reportedly led by the Students' Federation of India (SFI-UK), a left-wing student organisation, whom she called "ultra-left and communal friends".

"These people do this everywhere. They do it wherever I go. I support every religion. I support Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians. Do not name one caste, name everyone. What you people are doing is not right. The politics you people are doing, my ultra-left friends and communal friends don't do that," she said.

A statement was issued by the SFI-UK after the event, wherein they took responsibility for the protest,  saying they were opposing Banerjee's "corrupt and undemocratic rule" in Bengal. They also condemned Kellogg College for hosting Banerjee, calling her an “anti-democratic leader.”

"SFI-UK held a demonstration in Kellogg College, Oxford against Mamata Banerjee's speech. We opposed her blatant lies by asking her for evidence of the social development she claims to pioneer. Instead of allowing us to peacefully express our opinions, the police were called," they wrote on X.

The group claimed they had asked Banerjee to clarify her stance on the lack of student elections in Bengal for the past six years, the surge in school dropout rates among girls, and alleged suppression of protests by students at Jadavpur University.

Despite the interruptions, the event continued, as Banerjee tried to respond to the questions, highlighting that it is democracy and the people are free to raise their voice.

"Didi is not bothered. Didi will come twice every year and fight like a royal Bengal tiger," she declared.

Reacting to Mamata Banerjee's UK visit and her remarks at the college, TMC MP Saugata Roy said: "I totally condemn this (behaviour by the students with Mamata Banerjee at the university where she was giving speech)...It is for the university authority and England police to take steps in this matter."
