The history behind the festival varies from region to region. Where some believe that on this day Shiva got married to Parvati, while other popular legends believe that it was this night centuries ago when Lord Shiva performed his heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. Devotees on Maha Shivaratri observe a strict fast and do various religious activities like fasting, offering prayer on the Shivalinga and doing pujas. Some of the devotees do not even take a drop of water and keep vigil all night.
