Yogi Adityanath is new UP CM; Keshav Maurya, Dinesh Sharma his deputies
LUCKNOW: In a stunning turn of events, firebrand BJP MP Yogi Adityanath was on Saturday unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader after he emerged as the front runner in Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's race. The Gorakhpur MP will head the new UP government with Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma as his deputies.
Known for his firebrand Hindutva image, the 44-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader comes from the Rajput community and is the head of the Gorakhnath Mutt in Gorakhpur, which has millions of followers from eastern UP and neighbouring Nepal.
As it happened:
- Adityanath's name was proposed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suresh Khanna and was supported by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.
- "I am thankful for the decision. Dinesh Sharma and I are the deputy chief ministers," the Keshav Maurya said, adding people's "welfare is the priority" for the new government in Uttar Pradesh.
- Adityanath's name was proposed by BJP leader Suresh Khanna and supported by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.
