The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has taken action against two individuals in connection with a luxury car accident in Kozhikode, in which a 20-year-old youth died while recording promotional clips. On Tuesday morning, the event occurred along the beach road within the Vellayil police station's jurisdiction.
The MVD suspended the driving license of Sabith Rahman, who drove the Mercedes-Benz G-Class involved in the accident, for one year. They also suspended the license of Mohammed Rabees, the driver of a Land Rover Defender, who was also present at the scene, for six months. According to MVD officials, both drivers appeared for questioning. However, according to them, their explanations were deemed unsatisfactory, as reported by PTI.
According to preliminary investigations, serious violations were reported and it was found that the Benz car lacked valid insurance and other necessary permits. Officials stated that the vehicle’s registration might be suspended pending a detailed inquiry.
The victim, Alvin, a resident of Vadakara, was the only child of his parents. Alvin, who recently returned from UAE, was filming promotional reels for a showroom specialising in high-end car accessories. On Tuesday, he was filming reels of the two luxury car for a private firm on the middle of the road, when he was struck by the speeding Benz car. The impact threw him several meters, causing severe injuries. Alvin succumbed to his injuries later that morning in a private hospital, according to On Manorama.
Police investigations determined that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class caused the accident. Initially, attempts were made to mislead authorities by providing details of another SUV used during the shoot. Both vehicles—the Benz and the Defender—were seized.
Sabith Rahman and Mohammed Rabees were taken into police custody for interrogation. A special MVD team has been appointed to investigate further. The department is awaiting the final report to take additional action, including suspending the vehicle’s registration.
