A postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while on duty last week. The body of the 32-year-old woman was found on August 9 morning in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital. This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities.
Veteran Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Sunday demanded that the CBI undertake custodial interrogation of Kolkata Police commissioner and previous principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in connection with its probe into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor.
"CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of Ex Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story," the TMC Rajya Sabha MP wrote in a social media post.
The parents of the woman doctor claimed that they were informed over phone on August 9 morning that their daughter died by suicide at the hospital, where she worked. Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal has stated that no one from the police force called up the parents to say that their daughter died by suicide.
Sandip Ghosh, who was the principal of the medical college when the crime took place, was interrogated by the CBI for long hours on Friday and Saturday.
The RG Kar college rape and murder case has sparked a series of nationwide protests by doctors, nurses, and medical students and staff crippling OPD services in many cities. In Delhi, hundreds of medics took streets on Saturday wearing stethoscopes over their white aprons.
They began their march from the Lady Harding Medical College on the sixth day of their agitation and to press for their demands such as a central law to check violence against healthcare personnel.
They held a 25-minute sit-in on reaching Connaught Place before police removed barricades and allowed them to proceed to the Jantar Mantar for the next phase of their demonstration, a candle light march.
Since Monday, non-emergency services such as OPD and diagnostics, and elective surgeries are hit at city-based health facilities, including at Centre-run AIIMS, Safdarjung hospital and RML hospital. Patients faced more inconvinience after medics from private hospitals such as Sir Ganga Ram, Fortis, and Apollo also joined protests on Sunday following a call by apex doctors' body Indian Medical Association (IMA) for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services.
In the wake of protests and strike by doctors and nursing staff, the Union Home Ministry has asked all state police forces to provide it situatuion reports every two hours. In a communication to state police forces, the ministry has said that the law and order situation of all states should be monitored in view of the protests.
"Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard may kindly be sent to the MHA control room (New Delhi) by Fax/ Email/ WhatsApp from 1600 hours today," the communication sent on Friday said.
Meanwhile, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh was questioned on Saturday for several hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation for the second consecutive day as part of its probe into the incident.
