Raut Granted Bail, Says 'Made A Scapegoat Ahead Of Maharashtra Polls'
Earlier today, the Metropolitan Magistrate 25th Court, Mazgaon had convicted the Rajya Sabha MP Raut under Indian Penal Code Section 500, sentencing him to 15 days imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000.
Sanjay Raut had accused Medha Somaiya and her husband Kirit Somaiya of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets, under the jurisdiction of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation on the outskirts of Mumbai.
In response to these allegations, Medha Somaiya had filed a complaint against Raut saying that all the allegations were baseless and defamatory. She also said that the allegations tainted her family's image in the society and caused her mental stress.
However, just hours after his conviction, Sanjay Raut was granted bail as his sentence was suspended for 30 days. He also claimed that he was made a "scapegoat" ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.
"How have I defamed anyone? Everything is on record. There is also a Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation report. I have only asked questions about whether there is corruption...But the entire judiciary in the country is influenced by the RSS (‘sanghikaran’), right from top to bottom. I will appeal in the sessions court and we tell the people how we are wronged," Raut added.
