Justice Delayed, But Not Denied: Nirbhaya's Mother After Hanging Of Convicts

Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi also said that she will request the Supreme Court to issue guidelines so that no one can adopt delaying tactics in such cases in future

New Delhi: The four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case were hanged to death at 5:30 a.m. in Delhi's Tihar jail on Friday. The victim's parents - mother Asha Devi and father Badrinath Singh - hailed the hanging saying that their daughter had finally got justice. "Our daughter is no more and won't return. We started this fight after she left us, this struggle was for her but we will continue this fight in future for our daughters. I hugged my daughter's picture and said finally you got justice," Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi told reporters. "Finally they have been hanged, it was a long struggle. Today we got justice, this day is dedicated to the daughters of the country. I thank the judiciary and government,"she added. "We will continue our fight for justice for India's daughters. Women will definitely feel safer after execution of gangrape case convicts; they also wanted them hanged," said Nirbhaya's mother. WATCH| Exclusive: Nirbhaya's parents reaction after hanging of culprits A Delhi court had on March 5 issued the death warrant for the four convicts - Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh - to be executed at 5:30 a.m. at Tihar jail. The jail authorities woke up the four convicts, who had been kept in four separate cells amid tight security, at 3.30 a.m. as per jail manual, two hours before the execution time. The four had reportedly spent a restless night. Earlier in the day, Akshay Thakur had moved the Supreme Court challenging rejection of his mercy petition. The apex court rejected his plea. Also, the lower court refused to stay the execution.
" It is a big day for Nirbhaya, us and all the women of this country. It is a day of justice. We thank all those who fought for us. Thank the courts for dismissing all the petitions that were used as delaying tactics "

The hanging was carried out as per schedule at 5:30 a.m. after a three-judge Supreme Court bench rejected the final plea by the convicts' lawyer AP Singh to stay their execution in a late-night hearing. The hangman, Pawan, who had reached the Tihar jail on Tuesday, three days before the hanging and conducted necessary dummy hanging, pulled the liver at the scheduled time. (With ANI Inputs)
