EAM S Jaishankar Meets Chinese Counterpart Wang Yi On Sidelines Of G20 Summit

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday. 

Jaishankar lauded the G20 for providing an opportunity for interaction between the two countries when the diplomatic ties were going through a difficult phase. 

"I am glad that we could meet today on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Johannesburg. Such gatherings have provided an opportunity for our interaction even when our ties were going through a difficult phase," he said in the opening remarks during the meeting. 

Pointing to the "polarised global situation," Jaishankar said, "Our two countries have worked hard to preserve and protect the G20 as an institution. This in itself testifies to the importance of international cooperation." 

In his remarks, the External Affairs Minister said there have been "some notable developments" since their last meeting during the G20 Summit in November 2024 in Rio. "Our NSA and Foreign Secretary have visited China and there have been discussions about various aspects of our relationship," he said. 

Taking to X, Jaishankar said: "The G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Johannesburg provided an opportunity to meet CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi of China this morning on its sidelines.

The EAM reached Johannesburg on Thursday on a two-day visit to South Africa to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
