J&K's Security Situation Not Alarming, Terror Attacks By Pakistan Are 'Pin-Pricks', Top Cop Says
The DGP expressed satisfaction with the public's active role in providing information about terrorists, emphasising the people's willingness to partner in the fight against terrorism.
Jammu and Kashmir's Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain stated on Saturday that the security situation in the Union Territory is not as alarming as projected. He described terror attacks in the valley as "pin-pricks," orchestrated by Pakistan to perpetuate bloodshed and sustain its politics and economy, news agency PTI reported.
Acccording to the report, Swain emphasised that all security agencies, with active public support, are committed to ending such "pin-pricks." The Indian State and its government, he asserted, possess the determination to defeat terrorism and prevent it from causing disruptions to normal life.
During his first public grievance redressal meeting in Jammu, Swain shared that there have been considerations of circulating photographs of slain foreign terrorists through Interpol, allowing their parents to learn of their demise.
Responding to questions about the security situation, particularly following a recent encounter in Rajouri, Swain urged against over-alarm. He acknowledged the challenges posed by a porous and difficult border and a complex neighboring system in Pakistan but stressed that the Indian State is resolute in thwarting terrorism's impact on normal life and security in Jammu and Kashmir.
"I do not think we should be over-alarmed. Yes, there is a porous and difficult border and a whole country (Pakistan) and a whole system is subverted and convoluted, so we have a challenge. No one is shying away from the reality that there is a challenge, but the Indian State and its government have the will and resoluteness to defeat it (terrorism) and not allow it to become a cause of concern where normal life, business activities, peace and security would be derailed (in Jammu and Kashmir)," Swain was quoted as saying by PTI.
Swain highlighted the need for vigilance among residents, particularly in Jammu province, asserting that the adversary's intent remains hostile despite limited capability. He emphasised the border state's historical issues and the enemy's linkage to its politics and economy, the report said.
The DGP expressed satisfaction with the public's active role in providing information about terrorists, emphasising the people's willingness to partner in the fight against terrorism, according to the report. Swain rejected the notion that isolated incidents indicate terrorists' control over the region, likening the collective strength to that of an elephant or a lion.
He criticised those perpetrating violence, stating that they manipulate bloodshed for their interests, misleading the public and recruiting the children of poor citizens for terrorism while enjoying lavish lifestyles, PTI reported.
Swain reassured the public that security agencies are committed to putting an end to the enemy's "pin-pricks and cuts," and that they are working together to eradicate terrorism. He mentioned the possibility of using Interpol to notify the families of unknown terrorists killed in encounters.
