Jamia Shooting Accused Identified As 'Rambhakt Gopal'; Went Live On Facebook Before Opening Fire

New Delhi: Hours after an unidentified man opened fire at a student protesting against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the Jamia Millia Islamia University on Thursday, ABP News came across the Facebook profile of the accused - which claims that his name is 'Rambhakt Gopal'. In what comes as a shocking matter of fact, the accused made a 'Facebook Live video' minutes before entering the campus area and opening fire. Though he did not say anything in the 44-second video, but visuals of him entering the protest zone and students conducting peaceful protest can be seen. In total, the accused made 4 such Facebook Live videos before calmly walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting 'Yeh lo aazadi' amid heavy police presence in the area. Earlier in the day, the accused even drafted several posts on his Facebook profile. "Shaheen Bhag (Bagh) khel khatm [Shaheen Bagh game over]" (sic) read one of this posts. "Meri antim yatra par... mujhe bhagwa me le jaayen... aur jai shree ram ke naare ho [In my funeral processing, take me in orange cloth with slogans of Jai Shree Ram]," read another post. The Facebook profile of the accused is filled with many hate speeches and all his recent posts seek revenge from one community. The bio of his social media profile reads: Rambhakt Gopal naam hai humara... Bio me itna hi kaafi hai... baaki samay aane par... Jai Shree Ram [My name is Rambhakt Gopal...This is sufficient for bio.. rest when the time arrives.. Jai Shree Ram]. [NOTE: The Facebook profile of the accused has now been deactivated] According to reports, the accused is a resident of Jewar area of Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Greater Noida. The student injured in the firing has been identified as Shadab Farooq - a mass communication student. He was later sent to AIIMS trauma centre. Doctors say he is out of danger. Apprehended person (Gopal) is being questioned," South East District (Delhi) DCP Chinmoy Biswal said while speaking to news agency ANI. The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, Take this independence. Suddenly, a gun-wielding man came out and opened fire. One bullet hit my friend's hand," Aamna Asif, a student of economics at the university, told news agency PTI. According to reports, the students were heading from Jamia to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat. The march was stopped at the Holy Family Hospital near the university. Students squatted in the area, asking the police to go back. As they raised slogans of "Go back, go back", police officials asked them to maintain peace and conduct their protest peacefully.
