New Delhi: A two-day curfew has been imposed in Shillong after violence broke out over the death of a former rebel leader. Petrol bombs were hurled at Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma's personal residence on Sunday.

On Sunday night, unidentified miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the residence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, police said according to a PTI report. The incident took place around 10:15 pm, vehicle-borne attackers threw two Molotov cocktail bottles towards his personal residence at Third Mile in Upper Shillong, the police said.
The first bottle was lobbed at the front part of the house while the second one was thrown behind the backyard, he said, prompting the guards there to douse the fire immediately.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, according to a senior district police officer.
A curfew has been imposed in Meghalaya capital Shillong and internet services have been shut down in at least four districts of the state amid stray incidents of vandalism and arson over a top militant leader’s encounter. The curfew was imposed in Shillong from 8 pm on Sunday, which will continue till 5 am on Tuesday.
The mobile internet was stopped for 48 hours beginning at 6 p.m. in the state’s East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi districts.
