I-N-D-I-A Vs PM Modi On Manipur To BJP-Congress Standoff Over Rajasthan: Parliament Monsoon Session Top Updates

Another day of Parliament's monsoon session witnessed repeated adjournments as functioning was hindered amid the opposition's sloganeering seeking discussion on the Manipur matter.

The third day of Parliament’s monsoon session witnessed chaos, disruptions, sloganeering and adjournments as both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha failed to function despite several rounds of resumptions. Several bills were tabled in the Lower House but no discussion could take place as opposition remained firm on its demand of PM Narendra Modi’s statement on the viral video incident of Manipur.

A video had gone viral from the violence-torn state showing two women being paraded naked by a group of men. The visuals sparked massive outrage across the country and many parties sought PM Modi’s statement inside the Parliament.

PM Modi had spoken on the issue during his address to the press on July 20 just before the beginning of the monsoon session. Here are the top updates on what all happened in Parliament on Monday:

Top Points

  • Amid the rising uproar in both Houses of Parliament over the Manipur issue, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that he is ready for a discussion on the issue and that it is important for the nation to know the truth on this 'sensitive' matter. Speaking in the Lok Sabha over the continuous demand of the opposition leaders for the government's statement on the viral video incident, Shah said that he requests the leaders to let a discussion take place in House on the matter. "I am ready for discussion on this in the House. I request the Opposition to let a discussion take place on this issue. It is important that the country gets to know the truth on this sensitive matter," the minister said.

  • Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh has been suspended from Rajya Sabha for the remaining duration of the Parliament's monsoon session for 'obstructing' the proceedings of the House. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that Sanjay Singh is suspended for the entire session for obstructing the proceedings of the House even after repeated refusals.

  • Reacting to it, AAP said that its legal team will look into the matter. Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said, "If Sanjay Singh is suspended for raising his voice for the truth, then we will not be upset. Our legal team will look into this matter, but this is unfortunate"

  • All opposition parties walked out of the Business Advisory Committee meeting in Rajya Sabha over the suspension of AAP MP Sanjay Singh for the current Monsoon session.

  • Leaders of the opposition parties raised slogans against PM Modi and the Central government and marched to Speaker’s Chair seeking the Prime Minister’s statement on the Manipur issue. Both houses echoed with ‘PM Modi Shame Shame’, ‘We Want Justice’, ‘Manipur Wants Justice’, ‘We Want Answer’.

  • The government withdrew DNA  Technology (Use and Application)  Regulation Bill,  2019.

  • Three bills - The National Dental Commission Bill, 2023, The National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill, 2023 and the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023 were introduced in the Lok Sabha.

  • Earlier in the day, AAP MP Raghav Chada said that the country demands that the government and PM Modi should speak on the issue of Manipur. "It is the responsibility of the Central govt to restore peace in the country. Today we are going to protest against this issue in the Parliament. Rajya Sabha Chairman should allow us to discuss on the Manipur issue," he added.

  • BSP Chief Mayawati tweeted that despite agreeing to discuss Manipur, it is sad and unfortunate that the time of the first two days of the current session of Parliament was wasted on the rule of law dispute. "Discussion and government statement on Manipur is necessary," she further said.

  • Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi said, "We also want the House to function and we want the PM to answer (on the Manipur situation). We don't want any ruckus to be created in the Parliament."
