Hyderabad ACP Booked For 'Obstructing' Police At Drunk-Driving Checkpoint

According to the police, the ACP was in plainclothes and traveling with three others when their Tata Safari was stopped at a drunk-driving checkpoint.

Hyderabad news: Hyderabad police have registered a case against Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suman Kumar from Siddipet district after he allegedly obstructed a drunk-driving check and attempted to shield an intoxicated driver. The incident occurred near SR Nagar Metro Station on the night of November 12-13 and gained attention after video footage showing the ACP’s confrontational behaviour surfaced on Thursday.

According to the police, the ACP was in plainclothes and traveling with three others when their Tata Safari was stopped at a drunk-driving checkpoint, as per a report on IANS. A female constable noticed that as the vehicle neared the checkpoint, the driver moved to the rear seat, switching places with a passenger who took over the driver’s seat. This prompted police to conduct breath analyzer tests on both individuals. Both men, however, refused to cooperate.

The ACP introduced himself to the traffic officers and insisted they be allowed to pass without the testing. Sub-Inspector G. Kantha Rao, who led the checkpoint team, requested the ACP to comply, leading to a heated exchange.

According to Kantha Rao’s complaint, the ACP pushed him and struck the vehicle's bonnet, damaging it, as per the report. After backup was summoned, the original driver, identified as businessman N. Jaypal Reddy from Alwal, was escorted to Madhura Nagar Police Station, where his Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) measured 39 mg/1000 ml—above the permissible limit of 30 mg.

The passengers included N. Srinivas and G. Venkat Rao. Constable Kaveri recorded the incident on her mobile phone, capturing the moment when the driver attempted to switch seats as the vehicle approached the checkpoint. The police have since filed a case against the ACP for his actions, and further investigations into the incident are underway.
