How Do Treasury And Opposition Benches Compare In Strength After 141 MP Suspensions? A Look At All Parties
With 14 Opposition MPs (13 from Lok Sabha, one from Rajya Sabha) suspended last week, a total of 141 opposition MPs have been suspended from both houses this session.
New Delhi: Around 49 more Opposition MPs were suspended from Lok Sabha on Tuesday for the remainder of this winter session, in addition to the 78 MPs – 33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha – who were suspended on Monday for unruly behaviour and disregarding the directions of the Chair.
With 14 Opposition MPs (13 from Lok Sabha, one from Rajya Sabha) suspended last week on Thursday, a total of 141 opposition MPs have been suspended from both houses this session.
The suspension occurred as the opposition continued to press for statements from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on last week’s Parliament security breach.
Among the major figures thrown out of Parliament in this session are the Congress' Shashi Tharoor, Karti Chidambaram, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi, the NCP's Supriya Sule, the Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav, and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.
How Many Opposition MPs Are Left?
Of the total 522 MPs in Lok Sabha, 323 are either from BJP or from an allied party. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone has 290 MPs.
Out of the remaining 199 opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha, 95 are suspended which leaves only 104 opposition lawmakers still sitting in the Lower House. Notably, most of the remaining MPs are from parties like Andhra Pradesh's ruling YSR Congress Party and Odisha's Biju Janata Dal, which have supported the BJP on various occasions.
In the Rajya Sabha, out of the 245 seats, 109 belong to BJP and NDA parties. Of the 136 remaining MPs, 46 have been suspended from the House for the rest of the winter session.
Hence, there are only 90 opposition MPs left to question the ruling party in the Upper House.
