History Of Sorts In Making: Bengal Governor Summons Assembly Session After Midnight
The Governor said the decision to call the house at the odd hour was taken “accepting the cabinet decision”.
Kolkata: West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday summoned the state assembly for a session past mid-night at 2 a.m. on March 7.
The Governor said the decision to call the house at the odd hour was taken “accepting the cabinet decision”.
“WB Guv: Summoning WBLA Invoking article 174 (1) of Constitution, accepting Cabinet Decision, Assembly has been summoned to meet on March 07, 2022 at 2.00 A.M.,” he tweeted.
Dhankar said that finding the timing of the session “after midnight somewhat odd”, adding the state Chief Secretary was called for urgent consultation before noon Thursday.
“WB Guv: Summoning WBLA Finding the timing of session after midnight somewhat odd, an outreach effort was made by calling Chief Secretary for urgent consultations before noon today. There was usual compliance failure. The issue was determined accepting the Cabinet Decision,” he wrote on the micro-blogging platform.
Commenting on the timing, West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee said the letter sent to the Governor may have had a “typographical error”.
“There must have been a typographical error that could have been avoided. The state government whenever they had sent (intimation) they had mentioned 2 PM,” Banerjee told ANI.
“Now it's up to the cabinet to decide,” he added when asked about the Governor summoning the assembly at 2 a.m.
The Governor had earlier sent back a recommendation by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for summoning the assembly for the Budget Session, PTI reported
He said that it must come from the state Cabinet as per constitutional provision.
