Amid Intense Heatwave In North India, IMD Forecasts Deficient Monsoon Rain In June — Details

Heatwave In India: IMD said that India will see below-normal monsoon rainfall in June. Heatwaves are likely to continue in parts of North India.

Heatwave In India: As the north and northwestern parts of the country reeled under an intense heatwave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday that India will receive below-normal monsoon rainfall in June.

"The average June rainfall for the country as a whole is most likely to be below normal i.e. less than 92 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA)," the weather office said in an update to the monsoon forecast. India has received 20 per cent deficient rains since the southwest monsoon set in over Kerala on May 30.

Large parts of northern and eastern India remained in the grip of a sweltering heatwave on Tuesday. Besides heatwaves during the day, warmer-than-usual nights have further exacerbated people's distress, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in parts of Uttar Pradesh, south Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab for the next few days.

As far as the national capital is concerned, the weather office has predicted that the residents in the city will continue to witness heatwave conditions along with gusty winds during the day, along with chances of very light rain. The IMD also said that nights are likely to remain warmer for the next few days. Maximum temperatures are likely to range from 44 to 46 degrees Celsius.

Heavy Rainfall Likely In Bengal, Assam

Amid scorching heat in North India, the Met Office has predicted a major respite for the eastern and northeastern parts of the country. The IMD has said that heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to hit the region till June 20.

The IMD further said that the conditions are favourable for the advancement of the monsoon in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and also some parts of Bihar over the next 3-4 days. "Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely in Odisha and Bihar during the next five days," the India Meteorological Department said. The weather conditions in the northeast have been attributed to a "cyclonic circulation" that lies over Assam at lower tropospheric levels. Meanwhile, several parts of Mumbai received rainfall on Wednesday morning.
