Manmohan Singh Last Rites Highlights: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 in Delhi on Thursday. He was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the national capital after his health deteriorated due to age-related issues. He breathed his last at 9:51 PM.
The former PM's mortal remains were brought to his residence from AIIMS Delhi late night on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and a host of leaders, visited Manmohan Singh's residence on Friday, December 27, to pay their final respects to him. They also offered their condolences to Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur.
Singh's daughter, who is a professor at Stanford Law School, landed in India on Friday evening. The last rites of Manmohan Singh are being held at Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat.
The Union Home Ministry has announced a seven-day state mourning will be observed throughout the country as a mark of respect to former prime minister Manmohan Singh,. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India. The national flag are also flying half-mast on the day of funeral at all Indian missions and high commissions abroad.
In a communication to all chief secretaries of state and union territories on Thursday, the home ministry also stated that Singh will be accorded a state funeral and that there there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.
Bihar, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Assam, and Telangana are some of the states that have announced week-long mourning over the former PM's demise.
Tributes poured in from all over the country and from various parts of the world, with people hailing him for his humility, vision, simplicity, economic reforms, and a fine human being.
Panjab University, where Manmohan Singh did his Master's in Economic in 1954, also organised a condolence meeting to pay homage to the former prime minister and distinguished alumnus. He was also a Senior Lecturer (1957-1959), Reader in Economics (1959-1963), and Professor of Economics (1963-1965) at the university.
Known as the architect of India's economic reforms, the veteran Congress leader, steered the country as the PM for a decade from 2004-2014, and also helped set up India's economic framework as a finance minister in the PV Narasimha Rao-led government.
