Farmers Protest: Today's Farmers' Meeting At Singhu Border Cancelled. Divide In SKM?

Farm Laws Repealed: A section of farmers are taking the lead in ending the agitation while some leaders want to continue the agitation on their other demands. Today, a meeting of the SKM was cancelled

Farm Laws Repealed: Amid reports of a split within the Farmers protest a major meeting of 40 farmers' organisations on the Singhu border has been cancelled. The proposal for the MSP committee set up and returning home of farmers was to be discussed. It is being reported that there is a rift between the farmers' organisations. Most of the farmers in Punjab are in favour of ending the agitation.

While many farmers' organisations in Punjab are in favour of ending the protest after the victory of the agitation, many farmers' organisations want to continue the protests on demands including MSP law and withdrawal of cases. Organisations that want to withdraw are into a consensus-building exercise.

The farmers' organisations were to hold an important meeting today to finalize strategies.

Of the 32 organisations of Punjab that met yesterday, it was agreed that with the withdrawal of agricultural laws from Parliament, the agitation has been succesful. The process of forming MSP law will take time, thus they should return after giving a deadline to the government.

According to sources, out of 32 organisations, nearly 20-22 of the organizations want to go back while close to 8-10 organisations are in favour of extending till the rest of the demands are met.

However, senior farmer leaders like Joginder Singh Ugrahan and Sarwan Singh Pandher of Punjab and Gurnam Chadhuni of Haryana are in favour of continuing the agitation. A large number of farmers from their organisations are sitting at Singhu and Tikri border

What are the differences?

The farm laws were first opposed by the farmers of PunjabIt was on their call that the farmers of Punjab, as well as Haryana, marched to Delhi. Later, farmers from western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand also joined. The movement gradually spread to many states of the countryStatistics show that in the country the highest procurement on MSP happens in Punjab and HaryanaTherefore, their major demand was not on MSP.

The priority of the farmers of Punjab was the withdrawal of three farm laws and non-penal action on stubble burningThe Central Government has fulfilled both demands.
