European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen Applauds India's Efforts To Develop Renewable Energy

The EU President's statement came during a 'Youth for a Greener Future' event hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in Delhi.

New Delhi: Recognizing India's commitment to renewable energy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Sunday that India and the European Union (EU) have a common ambition for green energy, particularly solar power, news agency ANI reported.

The EU President's statement came during a 'Youth for a Greener Future' event hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in Delhi.

“India and the European Union have a lot in common. I’ve seen your goals to have 50 per cent of energy from renewables in 2030. We share the idea that we really have to look into solar energy, wind energy, biomass, hydropower… geothermal. These are the ingredients for the success of the economy, betterment of people and of course protection of our climate,” Ursula was quoted by ANI in its report.

“We also have innovation in common, and I’m deeply convinced that our world will take the right direction in cutting emissions by harnessing clean, innovative technologies, the demand for which will be enormous,” she added.

On Sunday, the EU President arrived in India for a two-day official visit to enhance the strategic alliance between India and the EU. As President of the European Commission, she will be making her maiden trip to India.

Taking to Twitter, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “Warm and cordial welcome to President of the @EU_Commission @vonderleyen to India. She will be the Chief Guest at @raisinadialogue starting April 25.

During her visit, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will meet with President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral discussions.

Climate change and biodiversity loss, energy and digital transformation, connectivity, security and defence, and Indo-Pacific cooperation will be at the forefront of her discussions in Delhi.

The free trade agreement, investment protection agreement, and Geographical Indications agreement would be at the forefront of the EU-India economic agenda.

President von der Leyen will also speak at the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and discuss supply chain security in the energy industry with Indian and European enterprises.

The President of the European Commission has been invited as this year's Raisina Dialogue's Chief Guest and will speak during the opening session on April 25.
