'Not Aware About Donor Details': JD(U) Tells ECI On Receiving 'Anonymous' Electoral Bond Worth Rs 10 Cr

The party said that it received Rs 10 crore through electoral bonds in a sealed envelope sent to it in their office.

The Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) submitted its details of electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India where it stated that it received an envelope in its office with electoral bonds worth Rs 10 crore in the year 2019 which was encashed within days but the party has no information about the donor.

The poll body made public on Sunday hundreds of sealed-cover disclosures submitted to it by various political parties, and the filings made by Bihar's ruling party revealed that it received a total of more than Rs 24 crore in donation.

In its filing, the party revealed that it got a donation of Rs 2 crore from Shree Cement Limited and one crore from Bharti Airtel.

In another filing, Nitish Kumar's party stated that donations worth Rs 24.4 crore through these bonds were received by it many of which were issued from SBI branches in Hyderabad and Kolkata, and a few were issued in Patna.

However, the filing made by party's Bihar office was the most interesting in which it said that it was not aware about the details of the donors of the bonds received at its Patna office on April 3, 2019. Neither did the party tried to know about the donors because at that time there was no order from the Supreme Court.

"Somebody came to our office on 03-04-2019 at Patna and handed over a sealed envelope and when it was opened we found a bunch of electoral bonds containing 10 bonds of Rs 1 crore each," the party told ECI in its filing.

"Accordingly, as per gazette notification of the Government of India, we opened an account in SBI Main Branch, Patna, and deposited it, which was credited to our party account on 10-04-2019. In this view of the situation, we are unable to provide any more details about the donors," it added.

Shree Cement Limited and Bharti Airtel were listed in the same filing by the party.
