Mumbai Logs 15,166 Covid Cases, Highest Single-Day Rise; Delhi Reports 10,665 Infections

Delhi on Wednesday logged 10,665 Covid cases, the highest since May 12, and eight deaths. Mumbai reported 15,166 fresh Covid-19 infections.

New Delhi: Both Delhi and Mumbai logged more than 10,000 Covid-19 cases on Wednesday as India continued to record a surge in infections driven by the Omicron variant.

Delhi on Wednesday logged 10,665 Covid cases, the highest since May 12, and eight deaths. Mumbai reported 15,166 fresh Covid-19 infections, its highest-ever daily count, and three deaths.

On Tuesday, Delhi had recorded 5,481 Covid cases, almost half of Wednesday's count. The positivity rate has shot up to 11.88 per cent in Delhi.

The Delhi government has announced a weekend curfew to curb the sharp spike in cases, with Health Minister Satyendar Jain saying that the third Covid wave had started in the national capital.

The Delhi government has directed private hospitals to reserve 40 per cent beds for Covid patients.

The number of Covid-related deaths as well as that of admissions to hospitals have seen a significant jump in Delhi, according to official figures, PTI reported.

Latest government data showed that the number of patients in the city hospitals increased from 247 on January 1 to 531 on January 4. The number of patients on oxygen support has also gone up from 94 to 168 in the last three days and the number of patients on ventilator support has climbed from four to 14, PTI reported.

Mumbai Sees Highest Single-Day Rise In Covid Cases

Mumbai witnessed a 39 per cent jump in daily Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, recording 15,166 new cases in 24 hours. 

On Tuesday, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said if the daily Covid-19 cases cross the 20,000-mark, a lockdown would be imposed in the city.

Maharashtra reported 26,538 new Covid-19 cases and eight deaths on Wednesday. Active cases has mounted to  87,505 even though 5,331 people were discharged. The state's Omicron tally stood at 797, including 330 recoveries.
