Cyclone Shakti: South India Braces For Heavy Rain, Yellow Alert For Bengaluru

While cyclone formation has not yet been confirmed, Regional Meteorological Centre officials told ABP that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal between May 16-22.

A developing weather system over Andaman Sea has prompted close monitoring by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as forecasts suggest it could intensify into a cyclonic storm, tentatively named Cyclone Shakti, between May 23 and 28.

The upper air cyclonic circulation, currently situated over the Andaman Sea, extends from 1.5 km to 7.6 km above mean sea level and is tilting southwestward with height. While cyclone formation has not yet been confirmed, officials from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) told ABP Bengali that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal between May 16 and 22.

Bengaluru Hit By Heavy Rains, Yellow Alert Issued

Against the likely formation of the cyclone, Bengaluru faced intense rainfall and gusty winds on Tuesday, leading to widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees, and severe traffic snarls across the city. The showers brought some respite from the heat, cooling the city to 32°C, which is slightly below the average for this time of year.

A yellow alert has been declared for several districts in Karnataka until Thursday. These include Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Bidar, and Uttara Kannada.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast

In Tamil Nadu, the IMD expects heavy rainfall in Ghat regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Vellore, Namakkal, Karur, and Tiruchirappalli districts on April 15.

On April 16, isolated heavy showers are likely in Vellore, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and the Karaikal region.

Andhra Pradesh Forecast

In Andhra Pradesh, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are forecast over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam, with widespread rainfall expected in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on April 15.

The city of Amaravati is also likely to see partly cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 41°C, with nighttime lows around 29°C.
