Cyclone Asani To Recurve And Weaken. Isolated Heavy Rain Likely In Coastal AP, Odisha & West Bengal

From tomorrow, some parts of Andhra Pradesh will receive moderate amounts of rain, while heavy to very heavy showers can be observed at isolated places.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Tuesday said severe cyclonic storm 'Asani' has high probability of recurving and giving good amounts of rain in the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. Strong winds of upto 95-105 km per hour are also likely during the next 24 hours, after which the system will begin to weaken.

"It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards till May 10 night and reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining Odisha coast. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards Northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts. It is likely to weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm during the next the 24 hours," the IMD said, as reported by news agency ANI.

According to Met department, coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh are going to observe heavy rainfall with isolated places expected to witness very heavy showers. In coastal Odisha, there is prediction of heavy rainfall at isolated places from today evening.

From May 11, some parts of Andhra Pradesh will receive moderate amounts of rain, while heavy to very heavy showers can be observed at isolated places. In coastal Odisha and adjoining coastal West Bengal, there are chances of heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Wind speed around the centre of the system over Westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal is between 95-105 km per hour gusting to 115 km per hour, reported ANI.

However, wind speeds will drop by evening today and will not cause destructing to the coastal areas of the states.

"It would gradually decrease becoming 80-90 km per hour gusting to 100 km per hour over Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal from the evening. Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely along and off north Andhra Pradesh coast," IMD was quoted saying by ANI.

The weather system (Cyclone Asani), is likely to give rain in parts of Telangana too for the next  4-5 days.
