J&K Records First Covid Case This Year, 2 Kerala Women Under Treatment In Srinagar

J&K has reported its first Covid-19 cases of 2025, with two dental science students from Kerala testing positive in Srinagar.

Jammu & Kashmir has reported its first Covid-19 infections this year. Two persons have tested positive for Covid-19 at GMC Srinagar. According to health officials, both patients are dentists and have returned from outside Jammu and Kashmir. They have been kept in isolation and do not have any serious symptoms.

According to officials, both patients are women and hail from Kerala. They are pursuing their post-graduate MDS at the Government Dental College (GDC) in Srinagar.

They had recently returned from their hometown and were not well, an official said. They were sent to the Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, where they tested positive for Covid-19. "They have been isolated as per protocol," said principal of GDC Srinagar Sandeep Kaur Bali.

He further said, "Covid-19 is no longer the same threat as before. However, as a precaution, we have isolated the students in hostels and also provided them with separate toilets." He said all the staff and students of GDC Srinagar have been administered both doses of Covid-19 vaccine and also a booster dose.

He said, "There is nothing to worry. Covid-19 is emerging as a mild infection in many parts of the country and globally."

The Jammu and Kashmir Health and Medical Education Department has said that it is prepared to deal with cases if they increase.

Head of Chest Medicine, Professor Naveed Nazir Shah said, "Isolation facilities are present in many hospitals and cases of acute respiratory infection and pneumonia are also being screened."

Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, IDSP, said it has alerted its field units to keep a watch on suspected cases of Covid-19 in the community and report any cluster of cases with respiratory illnesses to the central control room.

Kerala is currently the worst-affected by the latest COVID-19 wave, with a total of 430 cases. This is followed by Maharashtra with 210 confirmed cases, as per the latest data provided by the Centre, updated till May 26.
