Constitution Day: Congress, Other Oppn Parties Boycott Event In Parliament's Central Hall

Congress has decided to boycott the Consitution Day event in Parliament and several other opposition parties have joined hands in solidarity.

New Delhi: While the country is set to celebrate the historic 'Constitution Day' when India’s Constituent Assembly formally adopted the supreme legal document on November 26, 1949, it is being said that Congress and several other opposition parties have decided to boycott the Constitution Day celebrations in the Central Hall of Parliament today.

According to a PTI report, sources have confirmed that Congress has decided to boycott the event and several other opposition parties have joined hands in solidarity.

The Constitution Day event in Central Hall in Parliament today will be presided over by President Ram Nath Kovind with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers in attendance.

The report mentioned that the Congress was in touch with leaders of many opposition parties for joining them in the boycott and it is being said that DMK, Shiv Sena, RSP, NCP, SP, TMC, the CPI, CPI(M), RJD, JMM, and IUML are likely to join hands and skip the event in Parliament.

Senior leaders of the CPI, CPI(M), RJD, DMK and the TMC have confirmed that they will not attend the event which is part of the government's 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' programme to mark 75 years of India's Independence.

Sources indicate the boycott was decided in informal consultations between party leaders.

A senior leader of a Left party said Opposition leaders have spoken to each other and decided to take this action against a government that, he alleged, has been routinely "insulting the constitution", reported PTI

A TMC leader said none of its MPs was presently Delhi to attend the event.

A senior leader of the DMK also confirmed that they will not attend the event which is being organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Speaker.

However, TRS, BJD and YSR Congress MPs are expected to attend the meeting, sources indicated.

Celebrations In Central Hall In Parliament

President Ram Nath Kovind will be leading the celebrations of Constitution Day live from the Central Hall of Parliament from 11:00 AM onwards, a statement by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs informed.

The occasion will also be graced by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Speaker, Ministers, MPs, and other dignitaries.

This event will be live-streamed through Sansad TV/DD and Online Portals.

 After the speech of the President, the whole nation is invited to read Preamble to the Constitution live with him. He will also inaugurate ‘Online Quiz on Constitutional Democracy’.
