Children’s Day 2020: Today the nation celebrates the festival of Diwali and also Children's day which is observed on the birthday anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru every year on November 14.
The day was chosen to raise awareness about the rights and development of children because of Nehru's fondness for children. He was also called 'Chacha Nehru’.

Here are 10 facts about Children’s Day:
1. In 1925, International Children's Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare.
2. Children’s Day was first observed on November 20th, 1956 in India in line with the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day.
3. After Nehru’s demise in 1964, lawmakers decided to turn his birthday anniversary into Children’s Day as a tribute to him.
4. Nehru was beloved by children who called him Chacha Nehru, he was an advocate for children’s rights, fulfilled childhood with proper education, and believed that ‘children of today make India of tomorrow’.
5. Nehru oversaw the creation of mass village enrollment programs and the construction of thousands of schools.
6. Nehru outlined a commitment in his five-year plans to guarantee free and compulsory primary education to all of India's children.
7. Under his governances, institutions of higher learning the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Indian Institutes of Management, and the National Institutes of Technology were established.
8. Provision of free milk and meals to children was also established to fight malnutrition.
9. In schools, various programs are organized, in many schools teachers perform for their students. Many educational and motivational programs are held across India, by and for children.
10. Children’s Day reminds of the rights children are entitled to, like right to education. According to Article 21 A children are entitled to free and compulsory elementary education for all children in the 6-14 year age group. They have right to be protected from any hazardous employment till the age of 14 years according to Article 24.
