'Oppn Can't Force Centre', Naidu Turns Emotional Over MPs Climbing Tables, Throwing Rulebook At Chair

Venkaiah Naidu expressed his anguish over opposition MPs 'unparliamentary behaviour' in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

New Delhi:  Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu condemned the behaviour of the opposition inside the house on Tuesday and called the act shameful. Naidu said that climbing on tables and throwing rulebook towards the chairperson is disrespectful and against the constitution. 

Naidu got emotional as he spoke about yesterday's ruckus by Opposition MPs and said, "All sacredness of this House was destroyed yesterday when some members sat on the tables and some climbed on the tables."

"There are no words to convey my anguish and condemn the act", Naidu said as he turned emotional. 

Naidu further said that if the opposition had some demands the house would have had a healthy debate on it. Naidu said, "there may be a difference of opinions but everyone should respect the chair. Opposition cannot force the house to do whatever they want by behaving in such a manner".

Naidu said that he is deeply saddened by the act of opposition.

 

What happened in Rajya Sabha?

Naidu's disgruntled speech comes after things in Rajya Sabha took an ugly turn on Tuesday when opposition MPs climbed on the officials' table, waved black cloth, and threw files when the House began a discussion on farmers' protest against new reform laws.

Several MPs stood on the table where the parliamentary staff sits right below the chair, while others crowded around it shouting anti-government slogans. A few members squatted on the tables for over one-and-half hours during which proceedings were adjourned multiple times.

While the government called the incident inside the House one which broke all barriers of unparliamentary behaviour, the Opposition said that what they wanted was not a "poetic discussion" on agriculture but one specific on repealing the 'black farm laws'.

'No regrets', Cong leader on creating ruckus in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday

Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said he has no regrets about creating ruckus in Rajya Sabha and is ready to face any action for raising his voice against the farm laws.

Bajwa was seen throwing an official file at the Chair after climbing the table occupied by officials during the protest by opposition members when the House was to commence a discussion on farmers' issues.

"I have no regrets. I will do this 100 times again if the government does not give us an opportunity to discuss the three black anti-agriculture laws," he told PTI.

"I will be happy if the government punishes me for highlighting the cause of farmers and seeking the repeal of anti-farmer laws. Being the son of a farmer, I stand by the farmers and their cause," he said.

Bajwa said they had "no other option" as the government was disallowing their notice seeking a discussion on the repeal of the three farm laws.
