The total capital investment for the project is estimated to cost Rs 22,864 crores. Out of the total length of 166.80 km, 144.80 km will be in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday gave a green light for the Development, Maintenance and Management of a 166.80 km four-lane, access-controlled greenfield National Highway No 06. The high-speed corridor will stretch from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam and will be built under the Hybrid Annuity Mode.

The total capital investment for the project is estimated to cost Rs 22,864 crores. Out of the total length of 166.80 km, 144.80 km will be in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam. This Greenfield high-speed corridor will ease the connectivity for the traffic moving from Guwahati to Silchar, as per the report published by the PIB.

Following the development of this project, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam, from the mainland and Guwahati, will experience improved connectivity along with reduced travel distance and time, along with enhanced logistics efficiency.

Project To Curb Congestion On Existing NH-06

This greenfield project will improve inter-city connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong & Silchar, traversing through Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, and Cachar district in Assam. In line with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, it will also curb the congestion on the existing NH-06 and enhance transport infrastructure development.

The project route is designed to connect seamlessly with key transport networks such as NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37, enhancing connectivity to major hubs including Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khlieriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.

Once completed, the Shillong–Silchar corridor is expected to significantly boost regional economic development by improving connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl, and Agartala. The initiative supports the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by strengthening infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, and promoting socio-economic progress in Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
