Mutual Cooperation Among Member Nations Can Boost Global Post-Covid Recovery: PM Modi At BRICS Summit

PM Modi attended the virtual summit of the five-nation grouping BRICS which is taking place in the backdrop the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the 14th BRICS Summit virtually and urged members nations to have a similar approach regarding the governance of the global economy. "Our mutual cooperation can make a useful contribution to the global post-covid recovery," PM Modi said in his opening remarks.

"There are multiple areas wherein through cooperation between BRICS nations, the citizens have benefitted. By increasing connectivity between BRICS Youth Summits, BRICS Sports, civil society organizations and think-tanks, we have strengthened our people-to-people connect," the Prime Minister said.

Futhermore, speaking on the Covid pandemic and its impact on global economy, PM Modi said, "Today, for the third consecutive year, we are meeting virtually in the midst of the challenges of the Covid pandemic. Although the outbreak of the pandemic has reduced globally, many of its side effects are still visible in the global economy."

PM Modi attended the virtual summit of the five-nation grouping BRICS which is taking place in the backdrop the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The summit was chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping. 

PM Modi will attend the annual summit on June 23 and 24 following an invitation by the Chinese Premier.

The BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) brings together five of the largest developing countries, representing 41 per cent of the global population, 24 per cent of the global GDP and 16 per cent of the global trade.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are also set to attend the summit. The summit is also taking place amid the lingering border row between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
